Overview:

Greetings! I am the writer, director and producer of Sotto Voce, an original feature short. It tells the fictional story of a modern-day castrato (a term used to describe 18th and 19th-century male singers who were castrated as young boys to preserve their pre-pubescent singing voice.) For roughly 150 years, countless young boys (mostly Italian) were subjected to this cruel act and sent to special schools where a rare few became mega stars and fabulously wealthy.

What if this tradition didn't become extinct, but instead went underground and was the dark secret behind some of the world's most famous singers? What lines would you cross for great art? For a chance at global fame?

What We Need:

I am aiming to raise $25,000 with a total production budget of $50,000. This budget covers the following:

  • 4-5 shooting days in New York City, Spring 2024

  • Production (cinematographer, 1st AD, line producer, cameras, lighting, crew, sets, costumes, props, casting)

  • Location fees for the theater, church, hotel and studio/office rehearsal room

  • Transport, food, insurance, admin and logistics

  • Talent

  • Post production (editing, sound, coloring, music rights)

  • Festival admission costs

There are three specific goals:

  1. To showcase my work as a filmmaker.

  2. As a proof-of-concept for a feature length project.

  3. Most importantly, to submit to film festivals where the work can be seen by industry professionals and garner interest not only in this project, but my feature length film and pilot about Yves Saint Laurent.

I have spent the last 20 years inventing, spinning and enhancing corporate brands with words and images. Film and television is the natural next step. Getting a film or TV project off the ground has always been rather impossible, and today is even more impossible – hence, the short film: a tangible, contained “product.” And it might even be fun to watch!

 Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a script?

Yes! Download here.

How long is the short film?

Around 16 minutes. This a good length for festival submissions.

Will you be submitting to film festivals?

Yes! My dream is Venice, but there are a bunch and I will make a plan when the time comes.

Can I donate by check?

You may. Make check to Stillman Meyer, LLC and mail to: 14 Horatio Street, 4B, NY, NY 10014.

Is there a feature length script?

Not yet, but I have lots of ideas, as well as a 30-minute version of the short film script.

Are there actors attached?

No. Actors in the pitch deck are for creative reference.

When are you planning to shoot? Where?

New York City. Spring 2024. Probably May. There might a location or two outside the city, but within the metro area.

What happens if it falls through? Doesn’t raise enough money? Can I get a refund?

After Feb 15th, I will determine if the production will be feasible. If not, I will refund the money. In the event of a production delay that pushes principal photography past 2025, I will refund any funds that have not been spent on pre-production.

Is it tax deductible?

I’m not set up as a 501c3 non profit, so I don’t think so.

Can I volunteer?

Sure, email me: david@stillmanmeyer.co

Will I get updates? Progress reports?

Indeed. The fundraising campaign ends Feb 15th. I will send email and update socials as events progress.
